What’s the cheapest tyres for my car?
We stock a range of brands and makes of tyres, deciding what tyre you need is not just a question of price, but also what sort of driving you will be doing. If you frequently make long distance trips (think the classic NZ getaway) then you may prefer to get a tyre designed for safer motorway driving. Did you know that a tyre out of alignment by as little as 2% is dragged sideways for approx 17 meters for every kilometre travelled?

What’s the minimum tyre tread depth?
1.5mm depth, across 3/4 of the width and around the entire circumference of the tyre.

Can you retread a worn tyre?
Tyres that are worn can be re-manufactured to replace the worn tread. This is known as retreading or recapping, a process of removing the worn tread and applying a new tread. Unfortunately retreading standard passenger vehicle tyres is less economical compared to the price of new cheap tyres.

What’s the best way to extend the life of my tyres?
Keep them up to pressure, try not to turn the steering wheel while your car isn’t moving and keep an eye out for punctures or leaks. Another good idea is to regularly rotate the tyres between front and rear axle. Generally the ‘driving’ wheels (e.g. front tyres in a front wheel drive vehicle) get more wear than the other tyres, so rotating allow for more even wear on the tyre surface.

The wrong tyre pressure also significantly increases tyre wear, shortening its lifespan and increasing the chances of the tyre failing whilst driving. If your not sure about what tyre pressure to use, just give us an email or a call, we’ll sort you out.

Brakes & Braking

My brake pads are wearing out, what’s happening?
Replacing brake pads is one of the facts of owning a vehicle, having safe, reliable braking is very important. For each type of vehicle their a minimum brake disc width and brake pad standard. It is a really good idea to replace the pads and the disks at the same times, if the pads are worn the disks have begun forming to the shape of the grove,

We can resurface them if there is enough meat left on the brakes (we will check the thickness first and let you know what your options are) or replace them with new ones.

Oil & filters

In a typical Hawke’s Bay winter frost, your engine will be going from freezing temperature to driving in a short period of time, let it warm-up for a few minutes and you will prolong engine life.

I want to get an oil change, should I replace the oil filter too?
It’s a good idea! Old oil means and old filter! By putting new oil into your car you don’t want to be running it through the old filter. We can do all of this for you for cheap! In fact, regularly replacing the oil and filter in your car is probably the easiest thing you can do to prolong the life of your vehicle. Next time you start your car listen to the sound it makes,

When you start your car, listen for the sound it makes, after about 30 seconds you will hear it change pitch, as the oil reaches to all the engine. Letting it warm up for just half a minute can prolong the life of the engine, reducing wear and tear.
